Metabolic and hormonal imbalance can cause issues with both hair loss and unwanted hair. While hair loss is common, since the average person loses 50-200 strands of hair everyday as part of the natural follicle growth cycle, more hair loss than usual or thinning areas on your scalp can be a sign of an imbalance. Imbalance in hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and thyroid levels can be a significant factor. Additionally, deficiencies in nutrients such as iron, zinc, protein, vitamin D and biotin have been significantly associated with hair loss.

How does metabolic and hormonal imbalance lead to unwanted hair?

Unwanted hair, a condition called hirsutism (HUR-soot-iz-um), is a common complication of hormonal and metabolic imbalance.  In fact, it affects 5-10% of women! It is usually caused by excess hormones, particularly testosterone. A sign of this condition is excess growth of dark or course hair on the face, chest or back.

What therapies do you have for decreasing unwanted hair?

The first step to treatment is to fix the underlying issue – imbalance. We assure that your hormones are optimized to a level that is appropriate for our body. We also add adjuncts to your therapy such as the following: anti-androgens (medications such as spironolactone and finasteride which block your body from producing male hormones), oral contraceptives (decrease male hormones in your body), and topical creams (such as eflornithine which slows down abnormal facial hair growth).  Lastly, laser therapy or photoepilation, during which a laser or highly concentrated light is passed over the skin to damage hair follicles, can be used to prevent hair from growing. Dr. Turner will meet with you to discuss your best treatment option.

The first step to treatment is to fix the underlying issue – imbalance. We assure that your hormones are optimized to a level that is appropriate for our body. We also obtain biopsies, if indicated, to assure that we are targeting the correct condition. As adjuncts to hormone and metabolic optimization, we can add the following as adjuncts: prescription medications, corticosteroid injections, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).  Dr. Turner will meet with you to discuss your best treatment option.
